A real guru…

March 10, 2010

With all of the discussion here lately about “gurus,” it was a true pleasure to meet a REAL one today.

He stood in front of hundreds of people and announced that “consistency” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

“I wouldn’t tolerate mere consistency,” he proclaimed. “Some will consistently underperform. Some will consistently create problems for the team. Some will consistently be unable to perform in pressure situations.”

He then said, “What any leader seeks — both from the team and from him-or-herself — is the combination of consistency and intensity.”

He looked at the audience, paused for effect, …with a visage that looks as though it should be on Mount Rushmore…and Don Shula had just impacted another team.

The all-time winningest coach in the history of the NFL concluded his speech…then, the 80-year-old coach signed autographs and posed for pictures with every person who desired a moment of his time.

It’s a funny thing…in today’s world we seem so willing to believe when a “quick fix” is advocated by one with modest achievements.

I’m NOT suggesting the new ways are wrong…or, just because something is old it should be revered. Neither approach is perfect.

However, when…through both his obvious credentials and his apparent character…a sage imparts wisdom of the ages, we should be ready to capture and implement the insights.
