My Dad was one of the best guitar players I’ve ever heard. But, Dad played the way everyone else played. In other words, he held the guitar just like everyone else did. He formed the chords with his left hand and picked with his right. 
(Which was kind of amazing, as he was left-handed and couldn’t do much at all with his right hand. Except play guitar…because he grew up in such a poor family, he couldn’t find or afford a left-handed guitar…and the only people who could help teach him were all right-handed.)
If you limit your thinking to a particular manner, it is still possible that you can become a virtuoso.
However…change your perception…and you can become totally original.
