It’s one of my earliest memories…sitting in a folding chair with a tiny Mickey Mouse guitar in my four-years-old hands at the extreme edge of the stage…I was about halfway back, to the point I now realize the crowd couldn’t see me…but, I could sure watch the focal point of their attention, the lead singer of the band…my Dad.
I’ve often wondered since if seeing my Dad in the spotlight that way — and observing the impact he had on people — is the main reason I have made my living either on the stage or behind a microphone my entire life?
I don’t think there’s any doubt…
Dad would have been 81 yesterday. Unfortunately, we lost him in August 2004 of congestive heart failure.
I’ve always realized I could become President of the United States or marry the Queen of England, return home, and as the motorcade passed, most people in my county would say, “Hey…look…it’s Dallas’ boy!” He was loved in our community more than I could describe.
You don’t have to be very old to realize that every day we live is one some person we loved did not get to see. Remind yourself of that…and not just on birthdays of the departed.
It means their memory will not fade away…and, probably more importantly, it means you and I will grasp the infinite value of a single day.
Not fade away…
